The port town of Essaouira will celebrate the 22nd Edition of the Gnaoua and World Music Festival from June 20th – 23rd, 2019. The annual Gnaoua Festival is a source of great pride for Essaouira and Morocco. It is part of the vibrant music and cultural scene that helps tourism to flourish in the region and also encourages artistic engagement of a community that has been marginalized for decades.
Essaouira comes alive with an extravaganza of color and sounds each year in celebration of the Gnaoua Festival.
The Gnaoua Festival is deeply rooted in both North and West African styles, sounds, and historic musical traditions. Visiting Essaouira during the Gnaoua festival offers an insider view of local culture and the town as it morphs into a vibrant scene filling the city’s cobblestone streets, alleyways, and main squares into performance venues. Essaouira comes alive with an extravaganza of color and sounds each year.
The Gnaoua Festival lineup extends beyond traditional local rhythms to include contemporary funk, blues, jazz, and soul both from Africa and from further afield. Essaouira will be transformed into a musical, artistic and cultural hub over the course of three days on six stages this June.
