Fatima Hassani, Mayor of Tangier

After a majority vote among 63 Northern Moroccan council members this October 2019, Fatima Hassini will become the second Moroccan woman elected for a major political position. She will take on the esteemed role of the Mayor of Tangier.

In accepting the role, Hassani acknowledged that the victory was beyond her. “It is an honor for the nation and for women. I dedicate it to all Moroccan women in all political parties, who play a major role in promoting women’s political participation.”

The first Moroccan female regional Mayor was Mbarka Bouaida. She currently governs the Guelmim Oued Noun region, one of Morocco’s twelve regions. The area is situated in the Western Sahara Desert.

Prior to becoming active in Morocco’s Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) Hassini was a well known Maghreb Arabe Presse journalist. The newspaper is a Moroccan official news agency. She will succeed her fellow PAM party member Ilyas EL Omari and take on the esteemed role as Mayor of the Tangier-Tetouan-Alhoceima region.

The PAM Party is a Moroccan political party. It was founded on August 10, 2008, by King Mohammed VI’s advisor and former interior minister, Fouad Ali El Himma.
