Supporters of the Israeli state are turning their eyes to Morocco this December 2019. They are anticipating the news of a scheduled meeting between US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and King Mohammed VI in Rabat. It has been rumored Pompeo will push for Morocco to have official diplomatic ties with Israel. The news came after Pompeo met with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The latter is hoping that the Kingdom’s support will help him secure a stronger position in Israeli’s upcoming government elections. Israel received the US’ support on March 25, 2019, when President Trump recognized Israeli’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

Morocco is considered a critical partner for the “US across the range of issues…and an important partner in promoting tolerance….with Israel,” said an official US State representative.

There are currently over 3,000 Jews living in Morocco and before the creation of Israel in 1948, there were three times more. The North African kingdom is considered to have the largest Jewish community in the Arab world.
