The 12th African Games are scheduled to take place in Rabat from August 19th – 31st, 2019. The games are a qualitfication step to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The program will include sports in rowing, canoeing, swimming, indoor and beach volleyball, basketball, handball, football, cycling, tennis, boxing, karate, judo, fighting, tae-kwon-doe, gymnastics, triathlon, table tennis, shooting sports, fencing, equestrian, archery, badminton and billiards. Newly added to this year’s African Games is a chess tournament. Competitions will take place in Moroccan cities of Rabat, Sale, Casablanca, Khemisset and El Jadida.
The African Games are intended to build cultural exchanges between the 54 African Union members, and to provide opportunities for talented young athletes.
In alignment with this ethos, the festival African Games logo door symbolizes hospitality, openness and the tolerance for the different ethnic groups living within Morocco. Also, reflected in the logo is historical step to be a part of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic process.
The African Games were created by Pierre de Coubertin, the founder and second president of the International Olympics Committee. The first African Games took place in 1965 in Brazzaville. The Games are partnered with The African Union and The Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa.
