Traditional Hammam in Morocco

Officials at the Casablanca Hassan II Mosque have revealed that the holy site’s hammam will be restored. The hammam was originally built in the 1980s and this marks the first time it will be accessible to the public.

The Casablanca Foundation de la Mosque Hassan II commissioned the French Company Deep Nature to renovate the Moroccan bathhouse. Since 2009, Deep Nature has won international spa awards for their innovative designs. For this project, they created an atmosphere that highlights the power of seawater.

The hammam will cover an area of 6,000 m2, divided into male and female sections. Each hammam will have a lobby with a tea and changing room. There will also be three Moorish baths (steam rooms), offered at varying temperatures, 300 m3 health bath, and a  pool with seawater. An area dedicated to services and care will have a marble bench for body scrubs and ghassoul coffee body wraps.

The hammam was designed to be environmentally friendly. The Deep Nature team used specialized technologies and energy optimization techniques throughout the renovation. For the finishing and decoration materials, space was entrusted to Moroccan master craftsmen. These fine materials and elegant touches will help communicate the beauty of Moroccan architecture and the traditional way of life. Hammams are Moroccan symbols of relaxation, serenity, and rejuvenation.

The hammam opened for a testing phase in May 2019. The official opening date is still pending. The Hassan II Grande White Mosque was built on reclaimed land in Casablanca and is located on the corniche that touches the Atlantic Ocean. In its former place was once a public swimming pool. The Hassan II Mosque is the largest mosque in Africa and the 5th largest in the world. The French group Bouygues and French architect Michel Pinseau were asked to create its minaret. The structure stands at 210 meters and was completed in 1993.
