On Thursday, June 27th, 2019 the Tangier Med port will open new terminals and increase its capacity by six million TEU. Even with a one billion dollar infusion, the Moroccan port is already considered the largest one in Africa. The new addition will now confirm it’s position as the largest in the Mediterranean.
Tangier Med port will open new terminals and increase its capacity by six million TEU.
Tangier Med Port director Rachid Houari expressed hope “the developments will add one million TEU of containers each year. The original terminal had reached 3.5 million TEU in six years.” The new terminals have been added as a result of a 1.3 billion euro extension. Morocco’s goal is to make Tangier Med a calling point for container shipping firms between Aisa, Europe, and the Americas.
The port serves French car manufacturers like Renault SA and Peugeot SA. The largest markets it serves are West Africa (40%), Europe (20%) the Americas (10%). From the time Morocco invested one billion euros in terminal one, 6,000 jobs were created. The trade zone area saw 70,000 jobs emerge from the investment. Tangier Med is located 40 minutes by ferry from the port of Algeciras and 52 kilometers from the center of Tangier.
