At night the crowded streets of the bustling city of Marrakech in the touristic capital of Morocco come alive with sacred snake charmers, storytellers and acrobats that have you at the edge of your seat. Fortune tellers and flame swallowers are abound in the famous Djemaa el Fna Square. In the midst of the day there is a similar hustle through the maze of Marrakech’s Souks. For travelers interested in planning a trip to Morocco you may be worried how to make your way around such a lively place. Here’s a short glimpse of how recent traveler, Lizzi Thompson of Bristol, wandered through the bustling city.
Morocco’s Blue washed town, Chefchaouen, is Memorabele…
“The pictures of the blue buildings and the green countryside are both in a tiny city in the Rif mountains called Chefchaouen. The city is isolated and busy with locals in the day, however at night it is completely silent except for the call to prayer. You can book a boutique riad during your visit in such as the upmarket, chic Ryad Lina or the artistic and charming, Dar Cherifa yet one of my preference was to sleep on one of the rooftops under the Moroccan stars.
Food…
Moroccan is was delicious. It’s a pradise of aromas that settle into your mouth with each bite. As a vegetarian I loved the roasted vegetables served with tagines, set on top of the slowly cooked and seasoned couscous as well as bisara (bean soup) lentil and stews. Dried fruit, nuts and Moroccan sweets of every kind were available in all of the markets. Local vendors in each medina sell orange juice, grapefruit and lemon juice. Tall glasses of freshly squeezed juice are available for under $1 USD.
