On December 18, 2019, at the 11th Congress of Culture Ministers meeting held in Tunis, Morocco’s capital Rabat was entered into the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) list. The decision was made after El Hassan Abayba, the Moroccan Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports proposed Rabat be inscribed as a heritage site for its history and renowned culture institutions.

It is a place of human heritage, coexistence, and unity.” Furthermore, the city’s programs are aligned with cultural characteristics that make it an excellent representative of African and Islamic Capitals.”

ISESCO was founded by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in May 1979. It has
54 member states and is one of the world’s largest international Islamic organizations. It specializes in the fields of education, science, and culture.
