Brussels Airport Network expands flights to Essaouria for Winter 2019-2020. The network will be adding two weekly flights to Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador. Essaouira is a Moroccan coastal town and a leading destination for travelers. The charming port city and resort town are located on the Atlantic Ocean.
Beginning October 27, 2019, Essaouira will become busier with Belgians looking to trade in their cold winter weather for a sunny Moroccan holiday. Essaouira’s 18th-century port town can be traced back to the end of the 1st century when the Berber King Juba II established a Tyrian purple factory. The town also had a strong connection with the Portuguese whose King D. Manuel I in 1506, who ordered a fortress to be built in Essaouira. The Castelo Real de Mogador can be discovered inside the town’s Skala de la Kasbah. The ramparts are lined with ancient brass cannons accompanied by ocean views, featured in Orson Welles’ Othello. The classic movie was filmed in the early fifties and included many scenes from Essaouira’s labyrinthine medina streets and alleys.
Essaouira is a beautiful location that attracts history buffs and the city has also become a popular designation for surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing. The “alizée” winds are the reason is Morocco’s water sports capital. Culture enthusiasts are also drawn to the town. Essaouria recently ran its annual Photo Nuits Festival and the luxurious Sofitel Essaouira Mogador Golf & Spa hosted the electronic MOGA music festival.
