The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) will take a decision in September 2019 as to which African country will host the 2025 World Championships. This will be the first time the continent of Africa will be host to the Cycling World Championships. Africa will be the final leg in this multi-continent competition.
In 2018 an invitation was sent to all 50 National Federations of the African Cycling Confederation. Morocco and Rwanda applied. On September 1st, 2019, the bid deadline will close and shortly after the Management Committee will announce the host city.
The World Championship consists of four events. Road race, individual time trial, team time trial, and mixed relay national team time trial. As of 2019, the team time trial at the UCI championships will change. The new race format will mix three men and three women from the Elite and Under-23 categories.
The first world championships for Men’s Road Race for Amateurs took place in 1921. Nürburgring in Germany hosted the first professional world championship in July 1927. Italy’s Alfredo Binda won the professional men’s race. The women’s road race was introduced in 1958.
