From February 25-28, 2020 Morocco’s leading public figures among the government sector, research institutions, and civil communities will come together in Rabat for a series of workshops and talks aimed at empowering Moroccan women by 2030. The meeting will be a continuation of the Ikram 2, an equality plan that was instated in 2017 and will finish at the end of 2021.
The newest framework aims to create more opportunities for women and help them become more financially independent by opening economic doors for them.
According to a 2019 report from the High Commission for Planning on Morocco’s active population, only 21.5% of women are part of the active population compared to 71% for men. Furthermore, although the employment rate reached 41.6% in Morocco during 2019, women only accounted for 18.6% of this statistic. The upcoming discussions will aim to find a solution to these issues.
The topic of helping Moroccan and all women on the African continent raise their voice has been gaining momentum. On January 29, 2020, a delegation from the National Union of Women of Morocco (UNFM) met with an Ethiopian women’s associations. At the meeting, The Vice President of the UNFM Fatima Dahbi stated “The African continent must also be developed by its women along with men. She further added that the “UNFM calls for a real partnership for the promotion and development of African women in the framework of Morocco’s policy of South-South cooperation.”
