A recent announcement made by the European Union Commission has secured up to $389 million for Morocco’s social and economic development programs. The distribution will be split between Morocco’s sustained development and reforms ($289 million euros) and its fight against human smuggling and irregular migration ($101.7 million euros). According to Josep Borrell, an EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, “Morocco has long been a partner of the European Union with which we share our borders and aspirations… their modernization steps have made rapprochement with Europe a strategic choice.”
The announcement was made in late December 2019 and is part of the EU Emergency Trust Fund for Africa.
