CasaArts Theatre to Set Casablanca as Africa’s Cultural Hub

The CasaArts Project, also known as the Grand Theatre of Casablanca, is set to be Africa’s largest theatre and will host musical concerts, theatre plays and other large-scale performances at its Mohammed V Square Location. The CasaArts construction is estimated to cost MAD1.44bn ($148.91m) and run by Casa Amenagement, a public limited company carrying out the economical, cutural, environmental activities for the Casablanca-Settat Region.

Construction of the building designed by Christan de Portzampar, started in October 2014. The architecture is inspired by the gaps and entrances of Moroccan medinas with 16m to 17m high red piles and cliffs. It will have a stage large enough to accommodate 35,000 people and two additional flexible theaters that seat 300 and 600 people. White terracotta panels and shear walls will cover the exterior of the building. The aim of the project is to reintroduce Casablanca on a global level and position it as Africa’s artistic and cultural capital. The project has received funding from local and state authorities and is scheduled to open sometime in May 2019.
